The text above was pulled directly from a complaint submitted to NHTSA by an owner of a new Honda CR-V.
Before I leave the Internet, I’d like to thank my good friend @Auto_Bear for providing the title for this post (below).

Isn't it actually illegal in some corners of the country to drive wearing flip flops? Certainly not in Texas, though, because I see many motorcycle riders wearing flip flops. And shorts. And wife beaters, with no helmet.

I don't know if this is in all states but I recall in drivers ed they mentioned something about a "blue law" where you could get cited for driving with improper footwear if you had sandals on, and it was for this exact reason.

It's not illegal in any state, but if it's considered the contributing factor in an accident, they can sometimes use it to fuel a different charge, such as recklessness or impairment.

As much as we may laugh, I have gotten a foot stuck momentarily wearing *boots* due to trim and design for tiny Japanese feets. So fuck that thing (tight clearanced footwell with protruding trim) in particular.

Hmmm. No left leg, eh? No right hand to shift to neutral or turn switch off? Maybe you should not drive at all, you mental midget.

Not sure why your family is scared to simply sit in the car, but they have good reason to be very scared of traveling in any car with you.

Agreed. Flip flops aren't going to protect your feet in any way. Obviously if I'm wearing shoes I'm not going to take them off to drive, but if I happen to hop in the car while wearing flip flops I'll just take them off my feet and drive barefoot - better chances of avoiding an accident in the first place, and same (i.e. zero) level of protection.

Flip flops are a plague in southern california.
IMO they are for wearing to the beach. That's it. Otherwise, no one should see your ugly feet, smell your fungus or hear you shuffle along. They are not for driving, or wearing to work, or the supermarket, or a restaurant, or the gym, or anything else. I'm so glad my work does not allow open toed shoes in the office.
I have a friend that went HIKING with them on near the coast, then complained about her foot discomfort. /facepalm
They also offer zero arch support.

I lol'd at "VERY SCARED TO SIT OR TRAVEL IN THE CAR." What the hell is it going to do while you're sitting there? Suck in your flip flop, start the ignition, put it into gear, take off the E-brake, and then floor it down the road?

Same here. I hate driving in flip flops.
This is what VA has to say about it. Neither barefoot or flip flops are illegal.

DMV Encourages Motorists to Wear Safe Footwear While Driving Warmer Temperatures Can Lead to Dangerous Driving Habits
RICHMOND - As the weather gets warmer, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding drivers that proper shoes play a big part in safety.
Drivers should wear safe footwear that does not have an open heel such as flip-flops or sandals because these types of shoes can slip off and wedge under accelerator or brake pedals. High-heeled shoes can also be problematic because heels can get caught in or under floor mats and delay accelerating or braking when needed. Driving in bare feet, socks, or stockings can also be dangerous causing your feet to slip off the gas or brake pedals. While wearing certain types of footwear while driving or driving barefoot is not illegal, vehicle control can be compromised, and it is not recommended.
Sneakers or low heel flat shoes are encouraged. Consider keeping an extra pair of good driving shoes in your car to wear while operating your vehicle. DMV cautions drivers to be extra careful in wet weather as slippery soles make it easier for your foot to slip off the pedals.
"Our employees see it all the time," says DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. "Our customer service representatives who conduct road tests have seen flip-flops and sandals come off and get stuck under the gas or brake pedal. Fortunately, we have not had any tragic situations, but that is what we are trying to prevent."
In April of last year, tragedy struck in Voorheesville, New York when a driver lost control and drove through a church vestibule, killing three elderly women. The driver told investigators a flip-flop fell off while driving.

In Germany there is currently no law that prohibits privately driving barefoot or wearing sandals, flip flops, high heels and other "non-adequate" shoes like those mentioned. Professional drivers, bus- or ambulance-drivers for example, have to wear "proper shoes" by law.
However, in case of an accident judges could - and in the past did - decide that a driver without proper shoes was at least partially responsible for what happened due to "increased operating danger". The same is true for insurance covering.

Somebody on Facebook said it might be a plot by the Illuminati to make the NHTSA look stupid and to lull people into not trusting them. That sad par is, I want to believe it.
Data integrity makes sense, but not as much sense as that.
